Just dropped: Snap Spectacles

Snap has launched its fifth-generation Spectacles 🤓

Snap has launched its fifth-generation Spectacles with significant upgrades aimed at the AR developer community. Unlike previous models, these Spectacles aren’t being sold to the public; they’re available exclusively to developers in a bid to spur new AR experiences.

Here’s what stands out, atleast from what I’ve read on it:

  • Immersive Display: 46-degree field of view, nearly double the previous version, with waveguide displays for richer colors and higher resolution.

  • High-Performance Hardware: Powered by two custom Qualcomm Snapdragon processors for better performance and heat management.

  • Improved Battery Life: Lasts up to 45 minutes on a single charge, with continuous power available via USB-C.

  • Hand and Voice Control: Navigation through intuitive hand tracking and voice commands.

  • Auto-Tinting Lenses: Adjust to outdoor lighting conditions, allowing for clearer AR displays in bright environments.

Instead of targeting everyday users, Snap is focusing on developers to build out the Spectacles' ecosystem. The new Spectacles can only be leased by developers who apply through Snap's Lens Studio platform, at a cost of $1,188 for one year, followed by $99 per month.

Snap is betting on developers to create compelling AR experiences that could define the future of AR technology. With increasing competition from tech giants like Meta, Apple, and Google, Snap’s developer-centric approach could either set it apart or become a costly gamble.

The key question remains: Will developers find enough value to invest in a platform with no current user base?
